Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from "Perpetuum mobile":

Love is cruel, untamed and powerful! In the end, it is better to stay alone and join Phoenix. What a dramatic statement from a person who has been let down by love! Who or what is Phoenix (Phenice)? The Phoenix is a bird named after the color purple (colorem phoeniceum habet). It is unique in the whole world, and it is still a powerful symbol today, as in the Phoenix rising from the ashes. The bird appears in various medieval literary works, including poems, legends and religious tracts.

The movement "Amor durus est" on text no. 142 from the Codex Buranus is conceived in part as a fugue. The main statements of the piece are performed in repetitively chanted chromatic tone sequences. "Amor durus est" is a demanding piece which brings "Flamma amoris" (On Fire), the third act of "Perpetuum mobile", to a sobering and virtuosic close.
