Das Klavier ist auf das feinste mit dem Orchester verwebt. Man kann sich das Eine nicht denken, ohne das andere. [...] Der Pianist ist in diesem Klavierkonzert nicht nur Solist, sondern auch Orchestermusiker, schrieb Clara Schumann nach der Uraufführung. Wie sie und auch alle nachfolgenden Pianisten erfahren mussten, stellte die bis dahin ungewohnt enge Integration des Klaviers ins Orchester gesteigerte Ansprüche an Pianist und Dirigent - weicht doch hier das Kontrastprinzip klassischer Solokonzerte einem Verschmelzungsprinzip. Trotz gewisser, anfänglicher Verständnisschwierigkeiten wurde das Klavierkonzert eines der beliebtesten Stücke romantischer Musik.
Dans cette œuvre, l'intégration du piano dans l’orchestre pose au pianiste comme au chef d’orchestre des exigences accrues. Malgré certaines difficultés de compréhension au début, le Concerto pour piano devint un des morceaux favoris de la musique romantique.
